Together for Trödjeån

About the project

Trödjeån has historically been subjected to negative impacts from human activity. This has primarily consisted of extensive drainage of the river, forest areas, and wetlands in large parts of the river's catchment area. The riverbed has been cleared of stones and boulders to accelerate water drainage. This has led to a deterioration of the habitat for aquatic organisms. One species that has been particularly affected is the trout.

The project will implement fish-promoting measures by opening up a fish passage through a dam at an older sawmill and creating new spawning beds to strengthen the sea trout's ability to reproduce.

Over a stretch of about 400 meters, new spawning beds will be created by students at Trödje school and Realgymnasiet in Gävle together with the project leaders from the sport fishermen and the fishery management area association.

The project will also organize a public education day where the public is invited to engage in fishery management at the river.

From the application

In connection with the students from Trödje school creating spawning beds, they will participate in the sport fishermen's concept ”Skolbäcken”. It is an outdoor educational concept where students get a unique opportunity to learn about the inhabitants and ecology of the water directly by the water. Skolbäcken should also be seen as a professional development opportunity for participating educators, who will have the chance to increase their knowledge and gain inspiration to resume their visits to the river even after the project's conclusion.

More outdoor life is needed in schools, and the need for meaningful activities in nature for children is growing in an increasingly digitalized existence.

Realgymnasiet has a newly started course called fishing and water management and has sought areas where students can perform practical fishery management. This is a need we intend to meet within the project. In addition to students performing practical fishery management, they will be educated, and a plan for continued collaboration around Trödjeån will be developed.

The hope is that the river can become an educational arena for children and young people of all ages.

Purpose and goals of the project

The purpose of the initiative is to make accessible, restore, and strengthen aquatic ecosystems as well as to enhance local engagement in the work in and around Trödjeån.

The goal of the project is five established spawning beds and one addressed migration barrier at the sawmill. The project also aims to carry out the outdoor educational activity ”skolbäcken” and to organize a fishery management day for the public.
